It was February 13th in Shibuya, and Eden Doucet was reading manga in his room. He had some chocolate hearts in the oven that were supposed to be Valentine’s Day gifts for his friends and family (and, of course, some for himself). The timer then went off, and his kitchen was filled with the sweet smell of freshly baked chocolate. But when he took his treats out of the oven, he noticed something.

That’s way too much chocolate.” He thought. “I don't have enough friends to give all these to that aren’t an ocean away from me, and I certainly can’t eat all of these by myself…

Eden paced around his kitchen before his (host) mom walked in, “Oh, is the chocolate done? It looks delicious.”

“Yes, it is. I’m just not sure what to do with all of it.” Eden said.

“Perhaps you could give some of it to your acquaintances?” His host mom suggested. “They would probably just think it’s tomo chocolate and appreciate your generosity.”

“You do make a point; maybe I could write notes too!”

“That’s a good idea. Now, would I be able to sample-”

“I’ll get to it right now!”

Eden ran to his room and immediately brainstormed for whom he would give the rest of the chocolates too. He eventually came up with some: Nene Kusanagi, Emu Otori, Tsukasa Tenma, and Touya Aoyagi (he barely knew him, but Eden bumped into him in the hallway once, and he still feels bad about it to this day). But as he was writing the notes, a realization that should've come much sooner.

Eden is atrocious when it comes to talking with people, especially with people he doesn’t know well. It’s not like he could just give it to them without saying anything; that would just make it even more awkward than it already is. So, he’d have to strike up a conversation, unfortunately.

It doesn’t have to be anything too long; just a quick ‘here, take this, happy Valentine's Day.’ should do the trick. Knowing me, I’d stutter through the entire thing. Maybe I should practice saying it.” Eden wondered. “But not now. I need to finish Hana and Rui’s notes. They have to be special.

He did, in fact, not practice.

The next day, during lunch, Eden searched for all the people he needed to give gifts to too. He found Nene in an empty classroom and walked up to her to tap her on the shoulder.

“Huh- Oh, Doucet-san.” She greeted.

HeyKusanagisanIjustwantedtogiveyouthishappyvalentine’sday” Eden looked gave her two little goodie bags with the chocolate inside. “TheotheroneisforOtorisanokay have a nice day!!”. He then ran away with his tail in-between his legs.

“… Alright.” Nene said.

Eden did this with the rest of the people on his mental list. He’d awkwardly give out the chocolates and run away before they could say anything to him. After all this sprinting, he ran into one of his best friends, Hana Sonobe!

“I never knew you were going to try out for the track team.” She chuckled. “What’s got you sprinting around the school?”

“I was giving out chocolates to some acquaintances of mine, but I was extremely embarrassing while doing it, so I just left before they could say anything back to me.” Eden explained, letting out an exhausted sigh. “Oh yeah, speaking of that, I have some for you too.”

“Great, your baking’s the best!” Hana smiled before handing Eden a goodie bag. “I got you some too. It was kind of out of obligation, though.”

“Sorry to interrupt you, but, obligation???”

“Yeah. My parents are pretty traditional, and they expect girls to give chocolate to all the men in their lives. I’m sure they’d be surprised that I’d even get anything back.”

“Do guys not give gifts on Valentine's Day here??”

“Not really.”

“Just thinking about what a weirdo I must’ve looked like is making me feel so humiliated.” Eden covered his face in shame.

“You need to stop assuming the worst!” Hana scolded. “I’m sure whoever you gave it to isn’t thinking of you as some freak. You’ll be fine. Especially if one of those people was Rui.”

“Oh, I haven’t given him his chocolate yet.” Eden said. “I’m kind of nervous about doing it, actually…”

“Do you want me to give it to him and say it’s from you or something?” Hana asked.

“No, I don’t need you to do something that I can do so easily.” Eden insisted.

“That’s the spirit! I think he’s in our homeroom right now, so you should probably look there now.” Hana gave Eden a playful shove, or at least that’s what she intended for it to be. She actually shoved him so hard that he nearly fell onto the floor.

But still, Eden made his way to the classroom, and there he saw Rui, who was working on something. He sat at the desk right next to him and gently tapped him on the shoulder.

“Hey, Rui-kun? I just wanted to give you this; it’s chocolate that I made all by myself.” Eden quietly said, placing the goodie bag on the desk.

“Oh, hello, Eden-kun. I’m sure the chocolate tastes delicious, considering your passion for baking.” Rui said.

“Well, uh, thanks. I also left a little, something else in there. You don’t have to do it right now or even read it at all. Happy Valentine's Day!” Eden looked down at the floor, wanting nothing more than to just dissolve into the floor.

This piqued Rui’s curiosity. He opened the goodie bag and found chocolate, obviously, but there was a little note there as well. It wasn't just a note, though; it was a poem!

“Whenever I see you, it feels like my heart’s about to beat out of my chest.

I get so embarrassed that sometimes, I forget what I’m about to say.
But still, I’m so glad that I met you on that faithful day.
Even if it sounds a bit cliché
And I hope that one day,
My true feelings will be able to properly be conveyed.”

A soft smile formed on Rui’s face. He’ll definitely be keeping this.
